Marines, sailors and members of Marine Corps Installations across the Marine Corps observe October as Energy Action Month with the goal of reducing costs, waste, and increasing efficiency.

During the month of October, energy conservation managers, and other officials actively engage their respective commands and communities about the importance of conserving energy to prevent the waste of vital resources like power and water.

U.S. Navy Capt. Kent Hendricks, assistant chief of staff, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler Facilities speaks about the financial commitment involved when powering the base’s facilities.

“Marine Corps Base Butler alone will spend nearly $27 million in fiscal year 20 on utility costs with air conditioning and lighting being the main cost contributors,” said Hendricks. “Every individual can positively impact through good energy habits, behavior, and conservation efforts.”

The MCIPAC Energy Team partners with private industry organizations to provide a positive impact to the quality of life of Marines through effective and efficient repair, replacement and modification of energy-related building systems. This is accomplished by entering into an Energy Savings Performance Contract that will execute over the next several years.

Marine Corps Installations Command provides posters, statistics, flyers, calendars, and other resources on their website for public awareness and distribution in common areas at installations throughout the Marine Corps.

Some ways to reduce energy waste include turning off monitors and lights when exiting rooms, and turning off water faucets when shaving or brushing teeth.

It is the vision of the Marine Corps to increase efficient actions learned during Energy Action Month to generate sustained habits, leading to increased mission resiliency, enhanced energy security, and reduced costs.
