LtCol Boersma graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Studies.  After graduation from The Basic School in May 1997, he was assigned to Marine Aviation Training Support Group in Pensacola for training as a student Naval Aviator. Following various postings and training courses, LtCol Boersma received his wings of gold as a Naval Aviator in April 1999 and completed KC-130 training in July 2000. He was subsequently assigned to his first Fleet Marine Force unit, VMGR-252 in Cherry Point, North Carolina.  

 

LtCol Boersma participated in various MEU and Combined Arms Exercise training cycles while assigned to VMGR-252. During this assignment he deployed to both Croatia and Kosovo supporting the 26th MEU, and to Greece in support of a Brightstar Exercise. In December 2001, LtCol Boersma deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM serving as a KC-130 Pilot supporting operations for Task Force 58.

 

In July 2002, LtCol Boersma reported to the Marine Corps University where he attended Expeditionary Warfighting School. After graduation he was assigned to Training Squadron Two in Milton, Florida for duty as a Primary Flight Instructor in the T-34C. He served as the Squadron Aviation Safety Officer, Scheduling Officer, and Chief of Standardization during this assignment.

 

LtCol Boersma returned to the Fleet Marine Forces in August 2006 and deployed to Okinawa, Japan serving as the Air Officer for III MEF Current Operations.  During his tour he was involved in multiple exercises traveling to Korea, Japan, and Australia. This tour culminated with an embarkation aboard the USS BLUE RIDGE in support of Exercise Talisman Saber 2007. 

 

In September 2007, LtCol Boersma reported to VMGR-234 in Fort Worth, Texas. During this assignment he served as the Aviation Safety and Operations Officer while achieving designation as a KC-130 Division Leader and Instructor Pilot. Training detachments were conducted in multiple locations during this tour with travels to Europe, the Western Pacific, and South America.  Following this assignment, LtCol Boersma attended the US Army Command and Staff College, Fort Leavenworth Kansas, graduating in June 2011 and was subsequently assigned to USSOUTHCOM as an Exercise Planner for PANAMAX and as the Exercise Branch Chief in the J7.

 

He assumed his current position as the Commanding Officer, Camp Mujuk, Republic of Korea on 17 July 2014.

 

Personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a gold star, Joint Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. 

 

He is married to the former Patricia Spears of Sampson, Alabama.
