U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Ashleigh Fairow, the Communication Strategy and Operations officer with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations Pacific, examines a photo of her family on Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 27, 2021. A native of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Fairow became a commissioned officer in 2019 after earning a Bachelor of Science in English Studies and graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy at the age of 23. Her grandfather, retired Sgt. Ivor Griffin, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1945, making history as he became one of the 20,000 African-Americans trained to become Marines at Montford Point Camp, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
