Earth Day 2010 - AMC taking action today for a cleaner tomorrow

22 Apr 2010 | Stephen Kalmer

When we think about Earth Day, we often think about planting a tree, or riding bicycles to work to save on automobile gasoline.

But this year's Department of Energy Earth Day theme is "Take Action; Commit to a Clean Energy Future."   As we, the men and women of AMC, join millions of people in observing the 40th Earth Day, it's important to remember another important aspect of conservation:  energy used to power our facilities and homes.

AMC is currently doing its part to help minimize the impact that it has on the world's natural resources. Through conservation and a commitment to using renewable energy resources, we are reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere and improving our outlook for a greener tomorrow.  And how are we doing this?

AMC members have substantially reduced the energy needs of our facilities. Over the last year, for example, we've effectively reduced AMC facility energy consumption by enough to heat and power 3,300 traditional homes for a single year.

Together, we've done this through efficiency improvements in our heating and cooling systems, and through simple conservation measures such as turning off equipment when not needed -- this is a team effort and cultural change!

We've also taken advantage of renewable resources, such as ground source heat pumps at Charleston and other bases, to take advantage of the almost constant temperature of the earth to help heat and cool our facilities. Finally, we're increasing our renewable energy supply through investment in solar power and assessing other sources of renewable energy such as wind and biomass.

You are supporting our efforts, not only today, but every day, by making a commitment to become even more aware of the energy you're using.

Have no doubt that our individual actions do add up to a brighter, cleaner energy future for our planet.
