SgtMaj Leatherman was born on 13 January 1979 in Phoenix, AZ. He graduated from South Mountain High School in June 1997. He began Marine Corps Recruit Training on 15 December 1997 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego with Company L, Third Recruit Training Battalion.
In July 1998 PFC Leatherman reported to 1st Landing Support Battalion where he served as an Engineer Equipment Operator. He was promoted to LCpl Aug 1998.
In November 1999, LCpl Leatherman reported to 1st Transportation Support Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Ca. He served as a section leader, Plt Sgt, and Security Commander and was promoted to Cpl in October 2000 and Sgt January 2002. While there he deployed in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
In December 2003 Sgt Leatherman reported to 2d Transportation Support Battalion Camp Lejuene, NC. While there he served as Plt Sgt, SNCOIC, OIC. Sgt Leatherman was promoted to the rank of SSgt in June of 2006. While there he deployed in 2004 and 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in significant battles including Fallujah, Ramadi, and Blue Diamond with units such as ESB, CEB and TSB. While there was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal x 3
In July 2006, Staff Sergeant reported to Drill Instructors School Parris Island SC. Upon graduation SSgt Leatherman was assigned to Hotel Co. 2d RTBN. While there he was awarded the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
In September 2008 Staff Sergeant Leatherman reported to MWSS 374 Twentynine Palms, Ca. While there he served as Operations Chief, SNCOIC, OIC. While there he deployed in 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and to Afghanistan in 2010 where he served 14 month deployment as the G4 Operations Chief for 3d MAW. Upon return he attended the SNCO career course and Engineer Equipment Chiefs Advance Course. SSgt Leatherman won the Marine Aviation Ground Marine of the Year Award in 2009. SSgt Leatherman was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal X 2.
In July 2010 Staff Sergeant Leatherman reported to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, where he served as an instructor for the Basic Engineer Equipment Operators Course. SSgt Leatherman was promoted to the rank of GySgt on June of 2011. During his time in Fort Leonard Wood, Gunnery Sergeant Leatherman attended Advanced Course 1-12, where he excelled and was recognized as the Honor Graduate. GySgt Leatherman has served as a Basic instructor, a Senior Instructor, Co 1stSgt, SNCOIC of both the Basic school and advanced level schools. GySgt Leatherman was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal. GySgt Leatherman was selected for 1stSgt in transistion of orders to Twentynine Palms, Ca.
In Nov 2015 1stSgt Leatherman checked into 7th Marine Regiment for service as the H&S Company 1stSgt. In June 2016, 1stSgt Leatherman was reassigned to V34, Lima Company, Weapons Company and H&S Company as a company 1stSgt deploying to Marine Rotational Force Darwin Aus and SPMAGTF-CC deploying to Syria.
In June of 2019 1stSgt Leatherman checked into WFTBN, MCRDSD for service as the Field and Weapons Training Company 1stSgt and served the Marines until April of 2021.
In April of 2021 SgtMaj Leatherman checked into MWSS 372 to assume the postion as the Squadron SgtMaj and served the Marinesand Sailors until Oct of 2002.
Oct of 2022 SgtMaj Leatherman checked into Wounded Warrior Battalion West to assume the position of Battalion SgtMaj.
Sergeant Major Leatherman's personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal with gold stars in lieu of forth award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold stars in lieu of sixth award, Combat Action Ribbion and various other personal, Service and Campaign medals.
SgtMaj Leatherman is married to the previous Teresa Rodriguez from Fresno, Ca. Together they have 3 boys, Zavier (17), Vincent (15) and Isaiah (9).
