On March 30, 2024, US Marines, Sailors, Japanese government officials, Japan Self-Defense Force servicemembers, and distinguished guests attended the Reunion of Honor Ceremony in Iwo To, Japan. On the monument, it says, "40th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima, American and Japanese veterans met again on these same sands. This time in peace and friendship". The 79th annual Reunion of Honor ceremony commemorates the veterans who fought for their representative countries and made the ultimate sacrifices on this hallowed ground; their battle has inspired future generations to value and maintain peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
