1stSgt James A. Cabarrus

1stSgt Cabarrus reported to MCRD Parris Island on 10 July 2000. Upon graduation, Private Cabarrus was promoted too Private First Class and reported to Camp Geiger to be trained as an Infantryman. Upon graduation, he was selected as the honor graduate and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.

During his tour of duty with 1st Battalion 2nd Marines, Lance Corporal Cabarrus attended Infantry Squad Leader’s Course, Small Unit Tactical Leadership Course, and Special Operations Training Course. Lance Corporal Cabarrus was meritoriously promoted to Corporal and attended Green Belt Instructor Course, Corporal’s Course, and Mountain Warfare Training Course. In 2003, Corporal Cabarrus deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a combat “V”.

In August 2003, Corporal Cabarrus reenlisted and was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina to perform duties as a range coach. During his tour of duty at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, Corporal Cabarrus was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and held the billet of Primary Marksmanship Instructor. While serving in this billet, Sergeant Cabarrus was Primary Marksmanship Instructor of the week numerous times. Sergeant Cabarrus also attended the Martial Arts Instructor Trainer Course in Quantico, Virginia and Sergeants Course.

In August 2006, Sergeant Cabarrus received orders to 1st Battalion 3d Marines, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. While at 1st Battalion 3rd marines, Sergeant Cabarrus deployed to Iraq as a squad leader and received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. On November 2, 2007, Sergeant Cabarrus received a combat meritorious promotion to Staff Sergeant. In 2008 Staff Sergeant Cabarrus deployed again to Iraq as the JUMP Platoon Commander and received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Staff Sergeant was also awarded the Outstanding Volunteer Medal while at 1st Battalion 3d Marines.

In August of 2009 Staff Sergeant Cabarrus attended basic recruiter’s school and was assigned to Recruiting Station Atlanta where he served as a canvassing recruiter. After eighteen months of successful recruiting Staff Sergeant Cabarrus became the Station Commander for Recruiting Sub Station Columbus, Columbus, Georgia. On 1 January 2012 Staff Sergeant Cabarrus was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. On 25 October 2012 Gunnery Sergeant Cabarrus completed a successful tour on recruiting and was awarded the Navy/ Marine Corps Commendation medal.

In November of 2012 Gunnery Sergeant Cabarrus was transferred to 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he held the billet of Company Gunnery Sergeant and completed Infantry Unit Leaders Course. GySgt Cabarrus completed a unit deployment to Okinawa, Japan. In April of 2015 GySgt Cabarrus was frocked to the rank of 1stSgt and received orders to 2D MLG, HQ Regiment, Food Service Company.

First Sergeant Cabarrus’ personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with gold star in lieu of second award) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with “V” (and gold star in lieu of second award), Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (with four stars), Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and recruiting duty ribbon.

First Sergeant Cabarrus is married and has two children.
