The Boy Scouts of America, Okinawa district, held its Klondike Derby Feb. 20 at Kin Blue Training Area.

The Klondike Derby is an annual event held by some Boy Scout districts during the winter months. During the event, scout units encounter various stations where their skills and leadership abilities are tested.

"It's an awesome way to have some fun and test what we've learned over time, while learning new things in the process," said Marcus Board, 13, a Life Scout.

Each unit transported its gear on homemade sleds the scouts pulled to each station.

Each station the scouts encountered challenged a different trained skill, but all required determination and teamwork.

"One of the most important things you learn as a scout is the value of teamwork," said Joseph Wartella, 15, an Eagle Scout. "Being able to function as a group and put your minds together better ensures a successful outcome in any mission."

With the motto, "Be Prepared," scouts are constantly tested on their ability to adapt when they don't have ample resources.

"Often you won't have everything you need at your fingertips, so you're forced to improvise a plan and come together as a team to accomplish the task," said Dan Richards, the Boy Scouts Okinawa district executive officer.

Parents attending the event saw firsthand the progress and characteristics their children have built through the Boy Scouts.

"They are learning so many skills that will benefit them when they get older," said Stanley J. Strasinski, a parent. "The skills taught in the Boy Scouts are geared towards situations they may face in everyday life."

Klondike Derby stations tested the scouts' proficiency in first-aid, navigation, making a shelter, translating Morse code to pass messages and various other skills.

"The scouts have the skills, and now they finally got the chance to put them to the test," Richards said.

The Boy Scouts of America is an organization focused on training youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities and educational programs.
